Dana can be translated as cultivating generosity or giving. The tradition of Dana in Buddhism is an acknowledgement of our interconnectedness and interdependence. Since the Buddha’s time in the East, monasteries and teachers have been and are, generously supported by the lay community, and in turn they are provided places of refuge and teaching. This ancient and rich tradition has sustained the Dharma teachings for more than 2,500 years, since the time of the Buddha.
In the postmodern culture of the western world we have found that when we charge for the Dharma, it inevitably becomes a business. When it becomes a business, the business inevitably becomes more important than the Dharma. We have also found that if we don’t charge for something then the teachers are not able to make a living and we are unable to grow our organisations. At our events, if there is a charge, this will be merely to cover the cost of hosting the event, we are a non-profit organisation. We wish to give people the opportunity to practice Dana and contribute to the spreading of this Dharma which we hope you will agree is desperately needed in our society.
